Prior to serving as ad litem Judge for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Judge Solomy Bossa served as a Judge of the East African Court of Justice and, since 1997, as a Judge of the High Court of Uganda. She is currently a Judge of the Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court of Uganda and of the African Court of Human and People’s Rights. Judge Bossa founded and led several nonprofits dealing with women’s legal issues, including the East African Law Society; the East African Centre for Constitutional Development (Kituo cha Katiba); and the Uganda Network on Law, Ethics, HIV and AIDS. She has held office in a number of national and international NGOs and governmental institutions, including the Uganda Law Society; National Organization for Civic Education and Election Monitoring, Uganda; Uganda Law Council; Interim National Steering Committee on Community Service, Uganda; FIDA Uganda; Legal Aid Clinic of the Law Development Centre; International Bar Association Human Rights Institute; and International Commission of Jurists. She was selected for, and became outstanding participant in, the first series of human rights training programs that the International Association of Women Judges offered to eminent judges from East African nations. She has led similar seminars for colleagues in Uganda, served as senior trainer/monitor for seminars in other countries, and issued a number of scholarly judgments that demonstrate application of that training in matters that advanced the status of women in Uganda. Judge Bossa has received numerous awards from the legal fraternity in Uganda and other countries.
