Education: Graduate in Law (LL.B) and Masters in Political Science (M.A.), Peshawar University


Judge Khan received her M.A. in Political Science and her LL.B. from Peshawar University in Pakistan. In 1974, she became the first woman to be inducted into the provincial judiciary of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) as a Civil Judge. From 1974-1994, she held several positions: Senior Civil Judge of Peshawar, District and Sessions Judge of Peshawar, Judge of the High Court of Peshawar, and she was the first female Judge of the Superior Judiciary of Pakistan. In 2003, she became the Permanent Judge of the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). From 2007-2011, she was the Presiding Judge of Trial Chamber III, as well as Vice-President of the UN ICTR. From 2011-2012, she was the President of the UN ICTR. Since 2012, she has served as a Permanent Judge of the Appeals Chamber at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
